Trip Overview
Guided Hiking in Alto Salento with optional vintage picnic
Puglia is blessed with beautiful landscape, history and natural produce and on this hike you can gain a first-hand experience of all three. The walk starts near the significant archaeological site of Santa Maria D’Agnano, where the remains of Delia, dating back 25,000 years were found. As we hike past the site we’ll see the sweeping olive plains extending all the way to the coast and beautiful views of the Adriatic sea. We’ll ascend to the ancient shrine of Sant Oronzo, patron saint of Ostuni and Lecce, before descending through wild woodland, finally reaching a cave mill, used to grind floor many centuries ago. After the hike we will transfer you to the stunning “Citta Bianca” or “White City” of Ostuni. Our guide will accompany you on a fascinating stroll through the town. The tiny winding streets of the oldest quarter are known by the Arabic term the “Casbah” and certainly look more Greek or eastern than the stereotypical piazzas of northern Italy. Enjoy some light refreshment at one of our favourite local bars before transferring back to your hotel.
Alternatively make the most of your time in the countryside and enjoy a delicious picnic in the great outdoors. Depending on the time of year, we’ll chose a picturesque location, shaded by a grand old olive tree where you can relax after your hike and taste some of the simple delicacies for which the area is famous. To quench your thirst, a vintage “ape calessino” or tuk-tuk will magically appear in our country location to cater for all your wine and beverage needs. A truly unforgettable feast!
After lunch enjoy a visit of the White City of Ostuni (as described above) before returning back to your lodging.
